A one-person game studio

The Studio

The Craft of Play. Games you can understand in a minute and keep getting better at for months.

Player profile

One developer.
Every detail.

Cromware is a one-person studio building games with real mechanical depth (the kind you keep getting better at) behind controls anyone can pick up. Made for players who want to go deep, and simple enough to hand to someone who has never played one before.

Working solo means I touch every part of a project: design, code, art, audio and playtesting. It is slower than a team, and it is the reason the details stay consistent: nothing gets handed off, and nothing ships before it is genuinely good. My kids are the toughest usability test I have: if they cannot work out the controls, the controls are not clear enough. Depth is what keeps everyone else playing. Each project has come out sharper than the last, and the portfolio runs in the order it was made, so you can check that rather than take my word for it.

“The best games are the ones two people of completely different skill levels can both play, and both find something to enjoy.”

What I Optimize For

  • Rule 1

    Depth, not filler

Every game is built around a system with real depth, the kind you keep getting better at. Story and setting earn their place by making that system land harder. Nothing goes in as filler.

  • Rule 2

    No tutorial wall

You should be playing inside the first minute. If a game needs explaining before it is fun, it is not finished.

  • Rule 3

    Fundamentals first

Controls, feedback, pacing, readability. The bedrock never gets traded for the clever idea sitting on top of it.

  • Rule 4

    Finished, not just released

Commercial-grade polish and real support, from one pair of hands. Slower, but nothing ships half-done. Prototypes are labeled as prototypes.

Join the party!

A note when something new ships. Games, tools, nothing else.
